The International Marine Mammal Project and several other organizations intervened in support of the National Marine Fisheries Service in a challenge over its denial of a permit to the Georgia Aquarium. Specifically, the Georgia Aquarium sought a permit to import 18 wild-caught beluga whales from Russia despite the negative impacts of removing these whales from the wild. The National Marine Fisheries Service and the intervening plaintiffs prevailed, and the Georgia Aquarium was denied a permit to hold these whales in captivity.
